Tuesday evening several gentlemen made up a purse for the bagpiper and thereby induced him to play in front of a Walnut street drug store, from which he had previously been thrown into the street.

He had blown off a few agnozing rounds of “After the Ball”, when a glass full of water was thrown through the screen door striking him full in the face.

He merely “houched” a few inches to one side and after a long, discordant blast which was vivid reminder of Sells Bros’. menagerie, he bellowed forth the well known strains of “Boom De Aye”

ll of water was trickling down his neck, and without an instant’s cessation of the horrible shrieks he made another step to one side of the doorway and struck up a third antiquated tune.

Just as the merriment was at its height a bucket full of water made sloppy by washing soda glasses was thrown out of the doorway, entirely deluging the bagpiper and two Salvation Army women who happened to be coming up the street behind him.

In the hobo bagpiper we hardly recognized the spruce advance agent for the Kitson-Commons Theater Co.

Burlington Firefighters Pipes and Drums

The Burlington Firefighters Pipes and Drums was started in November of 2007 following the line-of-duty-death of Burlington fire fighter Wayne Topping. It was at his funeral that a small group of members from the Burlington Fire Department saw the need, and interest, in having a pipe and drum band of its own. Why a pipe and drum band? To quote Rick Lasky, Fire Chief of Lewisville Texas, it is about “Duty, Honour and Pride”, it is about “honouring our brothers and sisters, our families both in the fire house and at home”, “and the time to honour them is now, while they are here, while they can hear it.” Enlisting the vast knowledge and experience of Captain and Pipe Major Jeff Swance, with assistance from Special Constable and Pipe Sergeant Jeff Redford, Acting Captain and Pipe Corporal Dan Everett and retired Captain and Drum Sergeant Gary Humes, a group of approximately 20 members began lessons in Great Highland piping and Highland drumming. None, but the instructors had any experience in piping or drumming. Some members had no musical experience at all.
