Genre: Scottish Bagpipes, World Music

The bagpipes Contrary to popular belief, bagpipes originated in ancient Egypt. The Scottish Highlanders, however, were the first to develop the bagpipe into the instrument it is today. The standard Scottish bagpipe has one ‘chanter’ (the reed pipe of a bagpipe with finger holes on which the melody is played) and three ‘drones’ (the actual pipes), and an air bag. The usual range is about two octaves. To play a set of bagpipes well takes many years of practice. The bagpiper must combine several tones, maintain steady pressure while breathing, remember the tune, and be able to march!

Bagpipe music can be heard at weddings, parades, funeral processions, and grand openings. School sporting events sometimes hire a full bagpipe band as well. Popular bagpiper songs include ‘Skye Boat Song’, ‘Going Home’, and ‘Scotland the Brave’. Bagpipe music is, of course, most popular on St. Patrick’s Day.
